Ceramics

I began learning ceramics in Winter of 2021, and took classes until mid-Summer 2021. Although I am a beginner, I made some pieces I am proud of and would like to share here. These are a mix of hand-thrown and hand-built pieces, and are in chronological order of creation. One of my favorites is at the end!

Shima Enaga Bird Bowl. Handbuilt, Clay, Underglaze (For drawing/Painting), Clear Glaze. 2021

A group shot of some successful pieces. Handthrown clay, glaze. 2021.

“Winter Mug” Hand-thrown, etching, glaze. 2021.

This was a mug that I wanted to dedicate to a past bird friend of mine, Winter, and it was a learning piece for sure. So I didn’t anticipate the mug shrinking so much, nor did I expect the drip-like effect of the glaze. I tried a method our teacher showed us where you etch an image, let glaze fill in the lines, and then wipe away the initial glaze before applying another or firing it as-is. I was going to add a clear glaze after the initial fire, but I evidently didn’t wipe enough of the first glaze off and it resulted in this. I still think it came out kinda cool anyway, and I’m thankful that it didn’t stick to the bottom of the kiln.
